Raise a Reader

In September, we partner with the Alberni Valley News to run Raise-A-Reader – a program dedicated to raising funds and awareness to help sustain and grow literacy and learning in the Alberni Valley. As our largest fundraiser of the year, money raised helps supports our community’s most vulnerable people with literacy and learning programs, supplies and free services.

Since Literacy Alberni’s first Raise-a-Reader campaign in September 2006, the community has embraced the event. Local media (Alberni Valley News (now closed), AV Times, and 93.3 the Peak radio station) have annually engaged with the fundraiser through generous sponsorship, donations, and enthusiastic volunteerism.

Social service clubs have also become essential supporters of Raise-a-Reader. Over the past four years, Rotary Club of Port Alberni, Rotary Club of Port Alberni (Arrowsmith), Kinsmen Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, and Port Alberni Toy Run have all contributed generously. The contributions from social service clubs, along with an annual $16,000 contribution from Literacy Alberni, allow us to fund and support a Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) family literacy program in the Alberni Valley in partnership with School District 70.

Raise-a-Reader funds contribute to the ongoing reading and writing, numeracy, family literacy, nutritional literacy, computer literacy, adult literacy, financial literacy, ESL, literacy camps, and other special programming that make up our year in the Valley.

We are grateful for the tireless and committed efforts of the community, partners, and visionaries that all contribute to make our Raise-a-Reader one of the most successful in the country. It is with humility and profound gratitude that we say ‘thank you’ to the Port Alberni community for its support.
